  5. This document describes the features of the 2.2.2 release of
  6. the \*(FF facsimile system;

  19. Outgoing documents can be any format; the \f2sendfax\fP(1) program uses a
  20. rule-based definition file similar to the System V \f3/etc/magic\fP file 
  21. to deduce document types and to decide how to convert each document
  22. to a form suitable for transmission (either PostScript\(tm or \s-1TIFF/F\s+1).
  23. Automatic cover page generation is supported and users can easily
  24. tailor cover pages to their environment.  A simple text-based
  25. phonebook database is supported by sendfax.  Information is also
  26. provided on how to trivially setup an email to fax gateway service.

  28. Incoming facsimile are stored in a receiving area as \s-1TIFF/F\s+1 files and
  29. may be automatically delivered by mail and/or printed.  A fax server
  30. status program, \f2faxstat\fP(1), can be used to monitor the send and receive
  31. queues, as well as the state of facsimile servers.

  33. Fax modems may be shared with outgoing data communication applications
  34. that honor the ``\s-1UUCP\s+1 locking protocol.''  These applications typically
  35. include: cu, tip, kermit, uucp, slip, and ppp.  The system can also be
  36. configured so that incoming data calls cause the system to invoke the
  37. standard system getty program.

  39. The software is structured around a client-server architecture.  One
  40. facsimile server process exists for each fax modem on a network.
  41. Clients may send facsimile from any machine that can communicate with
  42. the machine(s) on which the server(s) reside.  Client software is
  43. designed to be lightweight and easy to port; imaging can be offloaded
  44. to the server or done on the client.  (Imaging is, however, typically
  45. done on the server because it simplifies administration.)  Multiple
  46. modems may be located on a single machine.  An access control mechanism
  47. is included to control which users on which machines may submit
  48. documents for transmission.

  50. The system supports a wide variety of fax modems.  Any Class 1,
  51. Class 2, or Class 2.0 modem should work with the software.
  52. The following table lists
  53. the modems that have been used successfully with the software.
  54. Note however that some modems perform better than others.  
  55. Wherever possible the FlexFAX
  56. software works around known modem problems or restricts modem usage in
  57. order to provide a functioning system. 
  58. Beware however that several
  59. Class 2 modems do not correctly implement the \s-1+FDIS\s+1
  60. command as specified in SP-2388-A. 
  61. As a result they are not recommended for use
  62. with this software because their firmware limitations make it possible
  63. to send only low-resolution, 1D-encoded, facsimile data.
  64. Chapter 7 of this document includes information about many
  65. modems that have been tried.
